Hi, I was perusing yet another article of many, trying to discover my dad's ancestral line, and clicked on an intriguing article concerning a family group in my area with a funny name, Dominickers.Never hearing of it, I read with interest about this group. Imagine my shock while looking at the family lines, seeing my maternal grandmothers name listed!!! As a little girl. I asked my grandmother once about where her family come from. Without a word being spoken, it was made abundantly clear she didn't wish to discuss it. Now, I know why! The last 24 hours have been somewhat of a watershed for me, as I came to grips with the initial discovery we were of apparent black descent. ( I have always felt a sense of not quite fitting in) But on further reading on this website and others ,I find out it may be more complicated than just a black and white issue. My gg grandparents are Martha Thomas and William Bland. However I managed to come into this world, I am forever grateful for all my ancestors and will continue to dig as far back as is possible, to complete my family's tree on both sides. I have learned there are many interesting roots indeed!

Here is a link to a book that provides a lot of information about the Catawba, Cheraw and other North and South Carolina tribes during the late 1700s and early 1800s, including the Ayres family:  http://archive.org/details/historyofoldcher00greg  .   It was written in 1867, when memories were still fresh and many of our ancestors were still around.

Hi. I have some old photos of my wife's family from the Dominicker settlement. Her gg grandparents are William H.P. Bland & Martha Thomas . Their son John married Martha Curry. I have the names of the family members in each photo as well. I have learned over the last few years from many sources about how life was in Holmes county. We are proud to know the history of her people and the happenings of this nation at the time which lead to the origins of this settlement. I saw another post on here of a person that has the same gg grandparents of my wife. I will share pictures if interest in them.
